2011 Minneapolis Auto Show

2011 Chevrolet Corvette Z06March brings many things to Minneapolis, melting snow, warmer weather, usually at least one large snow storm, and of course, the Minneapolis Auto Show. This year the automakers were in full force. Both Porsche and BMW returned to the show, sadly Infiniti was still notably absent. Without further delay, lets jump in and take a look at the winners, losers and just some general observations of the show. Read More…

2010 LA Auto Show: The Good, The Bad, The WTF

Mazda Shinari Concept

I had hoped to get this post out last week, but for those that followed my adventures at the LA Auto Show, I was running on four hours of sleep and many cans of Monster Energy drinks. Hence why this post is coming to you a little bit late.

The LA Auto Show is the kick off to the auto show season. Some say it sets the tone for the following auto shows. This year held a ton of promise as the auto industry gets back on to its feet and companies start churning out new product.

Infiniti Essence Concept

Highlights of the show ranged from Mazda Shinari concept car to new Ford Focus sedan and hatchback. Heck I was even excited to see the new Nissan Quest minivan. Yes, you read that correctly. I was excited to see  a new minivan. Hey, in my defense, the teaser shots they leaked out were quite compelling, and I was not let down. The new Quest is quite stunning in my opinion. It was a pleasant surprise to see the Infiniti Essence concept that made its debut a while back. The car is as stunning now as it was when it made its debut.

I was also looking forward to finally seeing the new Dodge Charger in person. Sitting in the new Charger and feeling the materials, I was pleasantly surprised. While not all is fixed, this is a huge leap in the right direction. I look forward to getting to spend more time with that vehicle along with the rest of the revamped Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep line-up.

2011 Toyota Corolla

The bad ranged from the “refreshed” Toyota Corolla to the “OMG they built that thing,” Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet. The Toyota Corolla is more of a shock and awe. The fact that you can now only get it with a four speed automatic or five speed manual blows my mind. Let me repeat that, four speed automatic. You know, like from the 90′s and early 2000′s. This calls for a “lets party like it’s 1999″ statement. Just shameful. Oh and they dropped the more powerful of the two engines. I’d be remiss if I forgot to mention the fact that you can no longer get leather on any Corolla.

2011 Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet

Moving along the bad portion of our trip down LA Auto Show lane we reach the “OMG they built that thing” section. We have heard rumors for years about a convertible Nissan Murano. Many outlets have comissioned drawings based upon insider knowledge. Well the time has finally come and Nissan took the sheet off the duckling. Is it ugly? Well, based on the gasp from the crowd, I am not entirely sure. I think the gasp from the crowd was a combination of, again, “OMG they built that thing,” and also a sticker shock when the price was announced at $46,390. I’m sorry, did you just have a slight heart attack? Because I am pretty sure the press at the Nissan press conference did as well. It was made slightly better when I learned later from a PR rep that the price is for the one trim model, which is a LE trim. This will come fully loaded with pretty much no options. Still, that is a pretty penny for this odd duckling.

Overall I would say the tone for the show was upbeat. The industry is clearly fighting to make its way back. Without question a nice foothold has been given, with sales up and profits finally being made, things are looking a little brighter. Here’s looking forward to seeing what is unveiled in Detroit in January.

Is Saab Reaching With The New 2010 9-5 Pricing?

The all-new 2010 Saab 9-5 is almost here.  Yesterday, the pricing was announced and I was shocked at first.  The lineup will be launching with the range-topping Aero model, with a sticker price of $49,990.  That is a hefty chunk of money, and a nice increase to the Aero’s price.  Though this is a much larger and modern vehicle, the last generation 9-5 Aero started at $41,425 (not that anyone actually paid that price).  The Aero will be coming standard with the 2.8 liter turbo V6 putting out 300 horsepower via Saab’s XWD, which is an all-wheel drive system that features Haldex’s trick torque vectoring.  They mentioned it will feature a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, so apparently the Aero model (at least at launch) will not have a manual transmission.  The Aero model should go on sale in July.  The entry-level model will feature Saab’s 2.0-liter turbo and will have a base price of “under $40,000.”  That is all that was announced for the pricing on that model for now – it should be arriving soon after the Aero model.

With the increased dimensions of the new 9-5 and upgraded content (available heads up display, cooled glovebox, lane departure warning, and many others) the question is the pricing.  This is deep into midsize luxury territory.  With the 9-5 being priced right in the middle of the new Infiniti M37x, BMW 528i, Mercedes E350 and the Audi A6 3.0T, can it compete?  Is the price too high?  This car will likely have many things at that price level that the competition might not (though we have not yet seen the ordering sheet and option pricing).  Time will tell how this new vehicle fares, but without question Saab enthusiasts have been waiting for a rebirth of their brand and this might be the car to start that.

2010 Minneapolis Auto Show

2011 Audi A8

The Minneapolis Auto Show has finally arrived.  I must admit that I look forward to the show every year.  The show is not large compared to others and, in reality, many concept cars go to the larger shows and skip us.  The reason I like our show is it is local and I am on my own time.  I can go with my friends with no scheduled agenda.  The big shows like Chicago and Detroit are a lot of fun but this is just different having a show near home.

The show was busier then I expected.  I talked to quite a few people that noted how the attendance numbers were up from last year already on the second day of the show.  The economy is in a slightly better place and car sales are starting to pick up and the attendance at the show is reflecting it. I am guessing that Ford was a major sponsor this year as many new Taurus’s were strewn about outside of the entrances.  I overheard several consumers commenting on how they liked the look of the new Taurus and most didn’t even know what it was.

Chevrolet Silverado ZR2 Concept

Some of the highlights included the special edition Synergy Green Camaro and the Silverado ZR2 Concept truck from Chevrolet.  Though many General Motors concept cars were missing, I was surprised to see the Cadillac Converj concept at the Cadillac Stand.  Ford had the new 2011 Edge along with the new 2011 Fiesta Sedan.  The updated 2011 Shelby GT500 Mustang was on the show floor with the hood open and, although the doors were locked, it was what was under the hood that was important.  Audi had the mighty R8 5.2 in a copper brown color with carbon fiber side blades.

2010 Audi R8 5.2

Some things I noted about the show: BMW, Porsche Infiniti were all absent.  While a few talked about Porsche, I’m not sure anyone noticed Infiniti was gone and the largest complaint of the show that I heard was “Where’s BMW?”  I spoke with one of the local BMW dealerships and they said that their research indicates that they do not sell enough cars by being at the auto show to warrant the expense. This absence just gave the competition such as Audi and Mercedes-Benz a chance to have BMW owners sit in their cars.  Another anomaly was Nissan.  They found it important to have the GT-R with a base price of $80,790 but not to have a 370Z, which starts at $29,990.  I was told that the reason was, “That is what they sent us…”.  Not a terribly good answer in my opinion.

Ross Testing the Man Step

I personally think many manufactures should take notes more from Ford.  They have been building terrific booths at the shows lately.  They engage the consumers and have a lot to look at, and I am not just talking product.  There are interactive games such as foosball and driving simulators not to mention the computers filled with information.

Overall the show was better then last year.  With more manufacturers in attendance and consumer attendance up, the atmosphere was a bit more upbeat.  The Minneapolis Auto Show’s tag line is “Your License to Dream” and I believe that is exactly what this show did for many consumers this year and with the products coming in the next year, I am sure next year will be even better for consumers.

Review- 2009 Infiniti G37 Convertible

2009 G37 Convertible
2009 G37 Convertible

Convertibles are not for everyone they are however a large segment and it is growing rapidly in the luxury market.  One of the main competitors to Infiniti’s G line is BMW’s 3 series line, of which almost half are sold as convertibles.  Infiniti has been missing out on this party for years but is looking to rectify that by launching the newest addition to the G line up, a hard top convertible.

Lopping off the top of a car is not as simple as it sounds.  Once the top if off you have lost a lot of structural rigidity that needs to be brought back.  Infiniti did a good job of reinforcing the chassis, so much so that the convertible is as rigid as the coupe.  Infiniti used a floor support on the transmission tunnel, two braces one in front of and one behind the rear wheels, and reinforcements behind the rear seats.  By adding all the reinforcements the convertible pays a toll at weigh in time with 453 pounds more then the coupe to lug around.  Top down operation takes a mere 30 seconds which when waiting seems a lot longer.  The top can not be opened or closed while moving.  With the top up Infiniti designer’s did a great job keeping its good looks with great integration of the cut lines.  Keeping the great looks of the G without the top has its compromises, mainly the trunk.  With a mere 2.5 cubic feet of trunk space with the top down, you will be using the “back seats” as your luggage rack.  That works out well seeing as a child could barely fit in the seats due to zero leg room.

The G37 I test drove had pretty much every option including the premium package, navigation package, sport package, and illuminated kick plates.  Starting at $43,850 you can get the G37 convertible north of $50,000 quickly by adding bulky option packages.  The interior was gorgeous with top end materials all around.  The navigation unit is a touch screen and can also be controlled by the buttons below it.  The whole head unit was easy to use and I was able to change the sound settings in under 20 seconds.  The sound system is Bose branded with 13 speakers sounded great.  There are speakers on each side of the head rests which are tied into the Audiopilot 2.0 noise cancellation technology.  This adjusts the stereo to compensate for the outside noise with the top down depending on your speed.  I found it worked quite well both on the highway and in the city.

3.7 V6 325 HP, 267 Lb-Ft

3.7 V6 325 HP, 267 Lb-Ft

Retained in the convertible is the coupe’s 3.7 V6 pushing out 325 HP, and 267 Lb-Ft to the rear wheels.  The engine is tied to a choice of a 6 speed manual or a 7 speed automatic.  The car I test drove had the 7 speed automatic which shifts quickly and cleanly.  The sport package adds magnesium shift paddles that when downshifted the transmission will rev match for a sweet sweet sound.  The exhaust has a glorious note that makes you want to tear off from every stop light.  The exhaust note is definitely more menacing then the BMW 335i’s at idle and in the low revs.

This car is a drivers car.  It retains the great looks of the coupe with some trunk usage compromises.  The car is great for driving down University Drive or just cruising the back roads in the country.  I would personally choose the back country roads option.  At the end of the day the G37 convertible is just that a convertible which entails compromise.  At the price as tested of $52,840 you are deep in the luxury convertible waters and there are many a sharks in those waters.  While the competition is steep I truly feel the G37 convertible is more then up to the task of taking a bite out of the competition.
